Many times we need to get to know someone before we really decide if we trust them. That’s called dating! For appraisers – make an appointment. Conduct an interview. How do they make you feel? The appraiser should have a good “bedside manner”. Do you feel stupid? (Pass). Do you feel relaxed? (Sign of trust).
Look at the gemological equipment in the office. Do they have a microscope? Do they have Master Diamonds for color comparison and determination? Do they have a UV fluorescent lamp? Fluorescence is a factor in establishing the identity and value of a diamond. This also is instrumental in gem identification.
Look for their continuing education documentation. Gemology and appraising require the appraiser to constantly stay in touch with the latest updates. Professional appraisers will attend trade shows to study the market and availability of gemstones. Many must take exams or submit documentation to prove they have attended pertinent educational seminars.
There should be no charge for investigating – you can take your jewelry in for the appraisal, listen, ask questions, receive an estimate, and decide to leave! This isn’t speed dating!! …Dii
